According to reports, the PS5 Slim requires an Internet connection to pair its detachable disc drive

Sony's thinner and redesigned PS5 system will allegedly require an internet connection to set up its detachable disc drive. As photographs of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 console bundle began to circulate online, fans discovered an intriguing feature on the rear of the box. The disclaimer, first reported by the 'Does it Play' Twitter account, reads: "Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup" — it's unclear whether this is just for the initial setup or if the process must be repeated every time the drive is removed and reattached.

According to a VGC report, Sony may be compelled to do an online check-in for verification reasons under Section 1201 of the DMCA Act, which aids in the prevention of piracy and third-party modifications. This assures that the detachable disc drive is an approved accessory, with a daughterboard that will connect to the PS5 console motherboard. While not specifically stated, moving to a new disc drive may prompt players to re-pair the two devices, resulting in a new digital handshake. Online game preservationists have begun to express worry about servers going down during the partnering process. Of course, it isn't an issue right now, but if Sony's servers dedicated to pairing and authentication are shut down in the future, players will be unable to access their physical media.

Remember that the aforementioned check will be run regardless of whether you purchased a 4K Blu-ray-equipped PS5 Slim or a Digital model and then added a drive. Hopefully, Sony will alter their rules in the future to remove the requirement for internet connectivity. A September Xbox leak disclosed Microsoft's plans to introduce a mid-gen makeover for its Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, both of which have an all-digital design that signifies a significant shift from physical media on the consoles. Sony has yet to explain the purpose behind the internet connection, as well as provide an official release date for the PS5 small.

However, earlier this month, it was reported that the 30% smaller edition will be released on November 10 in the United States, with a Spider-Man 2 package following two days later.

The new PS5 slim (disk edition) costs $499.99 (about Rs. 41,599), the same as the original, which was released in 2020, but comes with an improved 1TB SSD instead of the 825GB one. The entire hardware remains same, however the exterior faceplate now has a horizontal black stripe. The upper half sports a glossy surface, while the lower half houses the PlayStation-branded disc drive. Except for the lack of a disc drive, which may be purchased separately from authorized stores, the Digital Edition is identical. The PS5 slim Digital Edition costs more than the original edition, rising from $399 (about Rs. 33,190) to $449.99 (approximately Rs. 37,440).
