Mark Gurman: Apple Vision Pro Successor in Development, Cheaper Model to Be Released by End of 2025

Apple Vision Pro was announced last week at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, but a successor is already in the works, according to reports. Customers will be able to purchase Apple's first AR/VR spatial computer in months, but the company is also rumoured to be working on a more inexpensive version of the Apple Vision Pro headgear, which might appear a year after the first-generation gadget. The Vision Pro's replacement is expected to have a faster CPU with increased performance.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in his monthly Power On email that Apple is developing a successor to the Apple Vision Pro. The second-generation spatial computer, like the recently disclosed mixed reality headgear, is reported to support augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

Meanwhile, Gurman reiterates his prior allegation that Apple is still working on a more cheap version of its first-generation AR/VR spatial computer, which is expected to be released by the end of 2025. According to the publication, the gadget might be branded Apple Vision One or just Apple Vision, given that the high-end variant is called the Apple Vision Pro.

The Apple Vision Pro will be available in the United States next year for $3,499 (about Rs. 2,88,500), making it the company's most costly wearable gadget to yet. The cheaper headset is projected to be "several hundred dollars" less expensive than the first-generation headset, although Gurman did not specify a price.

Gurman speculates that in order to reduce the price of the headset, the cheaper edition may employ a less powerful CPU, fewer cameras and sensors, and send spatial audio through AirPods rather than the headgear. He goes on to say that it could "probably use lower quality screens." The panels on the recently unveiled gadget have a resolution more than 4K for each eye.

While Apple would have to cut some corners to reduce the price of the rumoured mixed reality headset, Gurman believes that a lower-cost Apple Vision is unlikely to "compromise" on EyeSight, the external display that depicts the wearer's eyes. The headgear is also likely to maintain the hand and eye tracking functionalities demonstrated during the WWDC 2023 keynote presentation.

According to Gurman, Apple could "knock several hundred dollars" off the price of the headset by making various decisions to decrease the costs, such as a more simple design for the headband, eliminating the 3D camera, utilising a cheaper frame, and streamlining its production process. It is worth mentioning, however, that Apple has yet to release the exact hardware specs of the first-generation Vision Pro headset, so specifics regarding its successor may take some time to emerge.
